Statement
I want to study
at Manchester School of Architecture because it is surrounded with beautiful
cultural heritage and rich Victorian gothic buildings, which is an ideal place
and comfortable environment to study architecture. Manchester University has
always been ranked among the top best universities in UK, so I believe the
university provides great facilities for this prestigious course. With better
teaching method, I can develop my creativity better in the field of
Architecture. I’m so excited when I heard about the collaboration between MSA
and Manchester Metropolitan as this enable me to use various resources from
both universities. The various resources could be useful towards my course
because it will develop my own ideas in creating a new design for my projects.
One of my favourite
architects is Tom Wright; a British architect. I admire Tom Wright’s successes
in all three basic elements of a great architecture, a soaring vision, a
refined sense of engineering aesthetics and money. His most notable design is
the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, UAE. I really like learn how he got inspired to
build such monumental structure, which motivates me to be an architect. It is
fascinating how Wright style intertwines with the culture in Dubai, sail-shaped
building on a man-made island with a membrane façade’s design.
One of my favourite buildings is the Burj Khalifa in
Dubai, UAE. Being the tallest building in the world at 829.8m, this modernist
building designed by Adrian Smith was to make for Dubai to gain international
recognition. I was impressed by the building’s design because it derived from
patterning systems embodied in Islamic architecture. The idea in producing the
design excites me to include the historical elements towards my design soon. The
structural and functional elements of the building used to support the building
and to withstand Dubai’s summer temperatures remind me that there is a lot
things to consider in making a great building.
Upon my
discovery of Wright building, Cesar Pelli, an Argentine architect designed such
an amazing structure in the world. The Petronas Twin Tower built in Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia was designed by him as the tallest building in the world for
six years, until 2004. The design is more radical, structurally expressive with
a diamond-façade’s texture consisting a lot of stainless steel and laminated glass.
The combination between Islamic art and Malaysia cultural used on the design
amazed me a lot. By getting a closer look towards the structures and shapes of
the building, I have developed my passion in the field of architecture. It is
important to experience architectural buildings in person in order to get a
sense of architecture, hence I would like to further my experience by studying
architecture in UK.
